Belated - Congratulations Lake Charles!
This year at our 39th Annual Awards Banquet, our Lake Charles Store won the honor of being our Store Of The Year!

Unfortunately, due to a bad wreck in the road, our Lake Charles store was unable to make it to our banquet.  They traveled and traveled, but was unable to make it to Beaumont.

Because of this accident, it was important for our team to acknowledge Lake Charles and give them the attention and plaque that they worked so hard to earn!  On Friday, April 27th, many of our Corporate staff went to Louisiana to celebrate with the Lake Charles staff.

They had a BBQ lunch and celebrated with a cake for desert.  This store works so hard to life high the name of Goodwill and give people jobs.  We are very proud of this team and were honored to celebrate with them for their hard work.

Congratulations, Lake Charles!  Thank you for all that you do! It's an honor to name you 2011 Store Of The Year!

We are so thankful for all of the people who donate and shop at Goodwill.  We are very proud of our Lumberton store for their dedication and hard work.  Be sure to stop by and congratulate our Lumberton Goodwill workers, and while you're there, stop and take a look around!  New merchandise comes into the stores all through the day!

Earth Day. Donate. Earth Day.
This Earth Day, April 22nd, Goodwill Industries urgers donors to use the Donation Impact Calculator at donate.goodwill.org to see how their gently used clothing and household goods help protect the planet while funding job training programs, employment placement services and other vital programs in our community.

You keep hearing us say "We need your donations! We need your donations!" But you ask yourself, "Why are my donations so important?"

Well, the Donation Impact Calculator will show you exactly why your donations are so important.  At donate.goodwill.org, you can click whatever it is you have donated and see what type of services and training you have given Goodwill the opportunity to do.  With your donations, you truly do change lives!

Tell Congress to Stand Up for Older Workers
The American economy finally appears to be on the rebound, but one of the most underreported lefacies of the great recession remains: the extraordinary number of senior citizens who are living in poverty or struggling to make ends meet.  A study released last week shows that 9 million older Americans can't pay their bills.  A full 1 out of 3 senior citizens is now economically insecure - either already in poverty, or living just a health problem, missed car payment, or lost job away from financial crisis.

People on all sides of the political spectrum are sure to agree that anyone who has spent his or her life working deserves not to face financial hardship in their golden years.  Many older Americans aren't looking for a handout - merely the abiity to continue earning a living.  Today,  Congress has an opportunity to give millions of seniors the chance to do just that.

The Older Americans Act (OAA), which for almost 50 years has been the major national vehicle for the organization and delivery of social services to seniors, is up for reauthorization this year.  Goodwill is proud to be among the co-sponsors of the One Away campaign, which is calling on congress to protect and strengthen the OAA.

Among the many important programs authorized under OAA is the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) - the only federal program disigend to prepare older workers for the modern labor market.  Through SCSEP, Goodwill matches older workers with nonprofits and public agencies that can procide on-the-job training opportunities, and then assists them with transitioning into regular employment.  Since 2006, Goodwill has served more than 6,000 seniors through SCSEP, helping more than 1,600 earn subsidized employment and live self-sufficiently and securely, which ultimately saves taxpayers millions of dollars each year.

One such indicidual is 64-year-old Gretchen "Wendy" Harris of Tacoma, WA.  After a 30-year career in the accoutning, banking defense contracting fields, she had to stop working after macular degeneration cause her progressive vision loss.  Like many seniors with disabilities, Harris thought she might never find employent again.  The she found SCSEP through the Tacoma Goodwill.  She became a participant, received job training, learned about accommodations that could help her perform a variety of duties, and found a position as a receptionist trainee at the Vision Loss Center in the State of Washington.  Within a year, she received a promotion, and is now economically self-sufficient.

"Before entering the program, I thought my life was over," said Harris.  "SCSEP interrupted that.  It's a window into a life I didn't know I'd ever have again.  It's amazing...just amazing."

At Goodwill Industries of Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana, we believe that every older American deserves the same shot that Harris received: the chance to live self-sufficiently through the power of work.  As Congress moved to reauthorize the OAA this year, we are urging its members to protect and strengthen programs like SCSEP in order to ensure that no older American lives one step away from economic crisis.

At OneAway.org more than 4,600 older Americans have shared their stories as they struggled to make ends meet.  If you or someone in your family is in a similar situation, I encourage you to share your story and tell congress that the time to stand up for older Americans is now.
Post Banquet
Well, the banquet is said and done. Thank you to everyone who made an effort to attend! It was such a memorable night acknowledging the wonderful people of Goodwill.

We had about 170 peope attend, with wonderful sponsors and volunteers included.  Ford Park did a wonderful job with set up, food and hosting.  We enjoyed our time together and are proud of the 39th Annual Banquet that is now in the book of memories.

Awarding our employees and community partners brings us such joy.  Without these people, it would be impossible to do what we do.  Our business truly does work, so people can.  We would like to thank each of you for coming out and being a part of this prestigious event.  We look forward to seeing each of you again next year.

At the end of our banquet we gave away close to 40 door prizes!  It ws great seeing the faces of attendees light up when their ticket number was called.  The grand door prize was a 5 day cruise to Cozumel and Progreso.  We raffled tickets for $10.00 each.  Christine and her husband from our Lumberton store had the lucky raffle ticket. Her and her husband will enjoy this wonderful vacation together, compliments of Goodwill, this coming September.
